One of my favorite meditations the Beloved has ever granted me came forth from a wise priest’s pen and the readings of this past Saturday. Featuring Zechariah’s befuddled amazement at the angel Gabriel’s announcement, the reflection was titled, “The Scary Fulfillment of My Dreams”. Its main point was that we can’t be so fearful, we fail to rejoice when grand things do happen!
My son has recently been discussing how he dislikes Christmas; really, his words are an attempt to stifle his heart’s expectations that want to fly forth. What if he doesn’t get the gifts he wants? What if he knows he’s been awful and hasn’t done many kind deeds to prepare for baby Jesus? Funny enough, my melancholic thoughts often mirror his.
Shut down the expectations, and disappointment will be averted.
My sanguine husband, on the other hand, coasts much better on trust and hope. Nope, he tells me, just remember you can always adjust your expectations. Here is the crux of the problem: we can’t wrest control of most situations and we can’t ensure our dreams come true. If we’re honest, we’ll admit most of them probably won’t.
Yet that doesn’t mean great things won’t happen and His dreams won’t become a reality.
Because God is the biggest dreamer ever to be! And He also is the one who can control the world, move our steps and hearts, and work those miracles. So, if this year or this day threw my hopes or plans into the dust, may I be humble and admit, they were pretty small and likely selfish.
Some of my heart’s desires will actually bloom forth though, if they’re the dreams the divine Sower has grown there.
The dreams of mine that come from Him are actually going to burst over my life in the greatest display of fireworks. Or at least something like a Christmas star. Hey, didn’t a Christmas star appear again this week?
Wow. He is going to do something INCREDIBLE!
And while I wait for it, I’m not going to be downhearted – lest I miss the glorious moment of its revelation as Zechariah did. If the sky falls at some point, his grace will be there to catch me, hold me, and help me to adjust my vision.
Dreams do come true. Get ready, and hope on.
Thank you for sharing this, Rachel! It’s very timely to be reminded of this beautiful truth.
